3 | Moon Planting 3

Some seeds sprouting |
In the third quarter, from full moon to last quarter moon, we are meant to sow bulbs, root crops and perennials, such as onions, potatoes and berries. I sowed some carrots seeds which I've attempted a few times but have failed. But homegrown carrots are so tasty, I'm trying them again this year. I also planted strawberries. It's the first time growing them on this plot.

Chrysanthemum Green Flowers |
Chrysanthemum greens are flowering now. I picked some for decorating the room. Apparently the flowers are edible too so might try cooking with them. I plan to harvest the seeds and grow them this season again.

During the second quarter, between waxing moon and full moon, we are meant to plant above ground crops with inside seeds such as beans, peppers and tomatoes so I sowed some cucumber, chilli and cherry tomato seeds.

Bunch of flowers from the garden |
I've been growing some vegetables using natural farming method for a few years now. But this year I'm going to incorporate moon planing as well. The first time I heard about moon planting was back in 2009 when I worked as a volunteer at the Centre of Alternative Technology in Wales. It was something I've been interested in but hadn't tried myself. A couple of weeks ago, a coworker was telling me about somethings she read about the phases of the moon and it made me want to try it out.
During the first quarter, between new moon and waxing moon, we are meant to plant above ground crops with outside seeds such as cabbage, lettuce and spinach so I sowed some Japanese spinach and lettuce seeds. Hopefully they will do well.

Vegetable Flowers

Japanese spinach flowers |
It really looks like spring is here in the garden. Many of the vegetables that I didn't harvest have turned into flowers. Rocket flowers are my favourite. Snow peas are blooming now and I ate the first harvest for lunch today. I had no idea what broccoli flowers looked like until I started growing them in the garden. Many of the Japanese spinach didn't grow very well this year but at least they are looking pretty now.

I left the broccoli plant after I harvested it last year. And look at it now! It turns out that broccoli is a perennial plant and have grown into a much bigger plant than last year.

Okra
Okra in the garden |
It's the second year I've grown okras. I like growing them because the flowers are so pretty and I like how the fruits grow. Last year I only had one plant that survived so just got to harvest one at a time. This year I have a few plants growing so I can harvest a few fruits at a time. Better for cooking. Must watch out for them every few days because they grow pretty fast and overgrown okras are hard not as tasty in my opinion.

Natural Farming Method

I've been growing some vegetables at home using natural farming method. It's a way of growing vegetables without ploughing, pesticides or fertilizer. At first I wasn't sure if the vegetables would grow but things that have grown have grown well. Not having to stress about weeding and getting rid of insects have made it a more peaceful experience.
And one part of the natural farming method is to harvest the seeds. Growing vegetables from the seeds harvested from the land helps grow vegetables that are more adjusted to the land. I get to enjoy the flowers that I normally wouldn't have enjoyed or seen because I would have harvested the vegetable before it flowered.

Dill Herb
Dill in my garden has just finished flowering. I got some seeds from the dill flowers last year and this year planted it in a sunnier spot. It did much better there and grew quite tall to about 1m high. It's such a beautiful plant with delicate leaves and structural flowers. It goes really well with salads and the seeds can be used for pickles too.

Oregano flowers
I got a pot of oregano from a friend last year and planted it in the garden. It's grown quite big these last few months and now it has some beautiful pink flowers on it. I got some in the kitchen too to enjoy them while cooking and doing the dishes.

Growing garlic
I planted some garlic cloves last summer and just harvested them last week. They are the easiest things to grow! Just plant them in September and cut the flower shoots in spring. Harvest them when it starts to dry. Save some cloves to plant for the next year.
